Son’s friend stole his birthday present, mother won’t return it?

It was my little boy’s 6th birthday last thursday, and we had a small party for him, invited a few of his friends round and had a great time. One of his presents was a vintage matchbox car his dad bought him from New Zealand (where he lives). The next day while we were looking through some of the presents he got I noticed the toy car was missing, I asked him where he put it, he said he gave it to his friend to look at during the party but never gave it back. I phoned the boy’s mother and asked if he still had and if so, would please return it, she said he didnt have it, I trust her so I told my son it must have been misplaced. On satuday I took my son to the boy’s house for a playdate, and low and behold, I saw him playing with the toy car, I told his mom that it was my son’s but the boy says it’s his (he has a big collection of vintage matchbox cars). She, of course believes him. I don’t know what to do next, my son is really upset, it was one of his favorite presents and it’s even more special to him as it was from his dad who he hardly ever sees (he lives in NZ). I know it’s not a serious enough issue to take legal action. What is there to do about this problem?
